Universities in Southern California Among the Best Institutions of Higher Learning in the USA

The universities of Southern California comprise a significant part of all institutions of higher education in the state of California. The majority of them are members of the Southern California HERC, including the University of San Diego, the University of Southern California, Westmont College, Pepperdine University, the University of California at Irvine and others.

Among the prominent universities in Southern California are the University of San Diego, the University of Southern California, the California Institute of Technology and Vanguard University of Southern California.

Founded in 1880 in Los Angeles as a Methodist University, the University of Southern California has evolved into one of international recognition. Since the time of its foundation, the university has expanded substantially to include 18 professional schools, the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and the Graduate School for graduates.

The US News and World Report has ranked the university the most selective among universities in Southern California and 30th overall in the United States. The university has an enrolment of 32,100 students, 15,680 of which are at the postgraduate level. In fact, the University of Southern California attracts more international students than any other institution of higher learning in the US. Currently 115 countries are represented in the university. There are nearly 14,000 support staff and 4,400 faculty members. The University of Southern California is prominent among other universities in Southern California for its professional schools in Business, Engineering, Law, Journalism, Medicine, Architecture and Public Policy, as well as for its celebrated School of Cinema & Television, the first in the country.

The University of San Diego, known as USD is located in San Diego, California. It is comprised of six schools, including those of Business Administration, Education, Law, Nursing and Health Science, Arts and Sciences and John Kroc School of Peace Studies. Currently the university offers about 60 Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degrees. The School of Law and the College of Arts and Sciences are regarded as the oldest divisions, while the Kroc School of Peace Studies is under development. The University of San Diego rates among the top 100 universities in the nation according to the U. S. News and World Report.
Regarded as a part of California State University system, California State University at Los Angeles is one of the largest universities in Southern California. It is organized in six colleges, which comprise 50 divisions and departments, offering a wide variety of majors to 21,000 students of the university.

The collegiate program of the university is seen as the largest in the nation. Currently California State University at Los Angeles awards more Bachelor's degrees as compared to other colleges and universities in California.

Vanguard University of Southern California is a Christian Comprehensive University of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies. Established in 1920, the university is owned by the Southern California District. Bachelor's degrees are offered in 30 majors in the departments of Anthropology, Business, Biology, Chemistry, History and Political Science, Exercise and Sports Science, Communication, English, Liberal Studies, Music, Psychology, Sociology, Mathematics, Spanish, Theatre Arts and Religion.
